Moldova-EU Pipe Opens

A 42 km (26 mile) pipeline that opened last week will for the first time allow Moldova to receive gas direct from EU and international markets. Gas accounts for over 60% of the country's primary energy demand, but Moldova has to date been wholly dependent on Russia for its gas — a particular concern now, as all Russian gas reaching Moldova first has to transit Ukraine.
