Taiwan bucked the trend seen in most traditional long-term Asian LNG buyers in the first half of 2015 by hoisting its imports to 7.12 million tons. The surprise 15.4% year-on-year increase allowed it to overtake India to become the region's fourth-largest LNG buyer. While the trend is unlikely to be sustained until state utility Taiwan Power (Taipower) starts bringing new gas-fired power capacity on line in two years, LNG has the potential to play a bigger role in the country, which looks increasingly likely to phase out nuclear power over the long run.
