Mozambique Presses Own Gas Plans

Such is the fixation on Mozambique's giant LNG projects that scant attention is paid to the country's hopes of using its prodigious resources to develop a gas-based industrial economy. LNG exports will come first and be the anchor for gas development, offering the fastest route to monetization and revenue flows for the state. But Mozambique's 2012 Gas Master Plan also outlined multiple other options, including power generation, gas to liquids (GTL), methanol, fertilizers, liquefied petroleum gas and pipelines that would require only a fraction of the estimated 200 trillion cubic feet (5.7 trillion cubic meters) of gas in place in the northern Rovuma Basin (WGIDec.10' 14).
