The chaos that has accompanied India's latest attempt to raise domestic gas prices shows no sign of letting up. The increase was postponed shortly before it was due to go into effect on Apr. 1 when the election watchdog said price reforms should be decided by whichever government took power after nationwide elections in April and May (WGI Apr.2'14). But Oil Minister Veerappa Moily confused the issue again last week when he said prices should be raised as soon as the election result is announced on May 16 — which marks the end of the Election Commission's "code of conduct" that bars government from taking decisions that can influence voters — and be backdated to Apr. 1.
