Renewables to Become Second Biggest Power Source, IEA Says

Renewables are set to become the world's second most important source of electricity over the next five years, behind coal and ahead of gas and nuclear, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The Paris-based agency said in its Medium-Term Renewable Energy Market Report 2013, published in late June, that renewables are growing more quickly than any other power source in percentage terms, and could provide a quarter of global gross power output by 2018, up from less than one-fifth in 2006. China will be the biggest growth market from 2012-18, potentially installing 310 gigawatts of renewable capacity, or 40% of the projected total. OECD Europe could add 130 GW if the region's biggest markets, including Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK, stop tinkering with subsidies (WGI Jul.3'13).
