Spot gas prices surged on both sides of the Atlantic last week, as inventories were drawn down during extended wintry weather. US natural gas prices hit 18-month highs of just over $4 per million Btu last week. But it was UK spot prices that soared most, briefly topping $22/MMBtu — levels not seen since March 2006. An eight-hour unscheduled disruption to flows through the Interconnector UK (IUK) pipeline from Belgium on Mar. 22, coinciding with a drop in UK gas storage to only about 10%-full, pushed up the within-day UK National Balancing Point (NBP) price on the morning of Mar. 22 to ￡1.50 per therm ($22.70/MMBtu). That's close to NBP's all-time record of ￡2.55/therm ($44.50/MMBtu) hit in mid-March 2006 (WGI Mar.15'06).
