With growth in natural gas production down on target over the past year, Egypt has already been forced to cut deliveries to local industry and LNG export terminals, as well as pipeline shipments to Jordan, to divert gas to domestic power stations and head off a repeat of last summer's electricity blackouts. And with gas consumption soaring by around 10% per year, the gap between output and demand is shrinking rapidly, meaning further cuts could be in the cards. In short, "we have a crisis," a top Egyptian energy official tells WGI.
