摘要

GFMS' latest assessment of gold mine production points to output having expanded by 7% in the first half; remarkable in the wider context of it having declined at an annual average rate of 2% between 2005 and 2008.This finding coincided with the South African Chamber of Mines' announcement that its domestic gold mine production, once again, fell by a sizeable margin. At peak production (in 1970) the country generated a volume of 1,000 t/y, accounting for two-thirds of world mine output: a dominance that will never be seen again. Nevertheless, these two material outcomes in fact lack any direct association. South African production fell by almost 10% in HI 2009.This is yet more significant given last year's unique challenges, including power rationing, but what is even more notable, is that South Africa was the only country to record a material drop in mine supply in the first half.
