Spain and UK questioned over enforcement; Fishmeal ban to end? Poland needs to step up preparations; West Coast fishermen get cash for permits; Bluefin fishing in Med avoids quotas; Canadian aquaculture rebounding; Dutch fishing revenue drops
The European Commission has sent letters to the Spanish and British governments warning them to fix problems in their enforcement of European fishery policy. The EU ban on the use of fishmeal in animal feed could be lifted when experts from member states meet to decide on a new testing regime. Poland, along with other states, will need to increase efforts to prepare for entry into the common fisheries policy. A scheme has been announced to buy out fishermen from the West coast US groundfish fleet in order to stabilise the fishery. Meanwhile new rules have been proposed to regulate the New England groundfish industry. Intensive methods of bluefin tuna fishing are avoidingg quotas by using a post-harvest method of fishing. Conservationists argue thefuture of the stock is in danger. Fish fanning in Canada is recovering following years of low prices. Producers are reporting profits and predictions for the future of the industry are improving. An annual report on the Dutch fishing fleet reported a drop in revenue for 2002, mainly due to a fall in the value of the inshore fleet's landings.
