ICES advice on cod bleak; EU unveils plans for advisory councils; EU and Cape Verde agree to deal; US shrimpers to receive trade aid; Uganda violating pact; 'Black boxes' to curb poaching; Farmed fish danger to wild fish
Numbers of cod and other species are continuing to plummet in European waters, prompting calls for new recovery plans. Fishermen are to be given a say in the Common Fisheries policy under plans by the European Commission to establish "regional advisory councils". EC and Atlantic state of Cape Verde extended their agreement for another year to allow Spanish, French and Portugese vessels to fish for tuna in their waters. Southern US shrimpers are to receive aid under a federal scheme. The move will also help them in their legal case against cheap foreign imports they claim are being dumped on their domestic market. Uganda has lifted a ban on fishing small fish in Lake Victoria, against the terms of an agreement signed last year. Experts fear it willbe disastrous for fish stocks and could lead to the collapse of the fishing industry. Australia has proposed fitting boats with satellite tracking devices to prevent illegal fishing in remote southern waters. An Irish Report has provided the first scientific proof of what many people have suspected for a long time -- that farmed salmon are a danger to the health of wild fish when the species are mixed.
