In late 2007, hope was given to UK fishermen as an announcement was made to allow increased catches of cod in the North Sea for the first time in many years. The 11 percent increase follows years of anguish for UK fishermen, a time that has seen hundreds leave the sector and vessels scrapped. Other increases announced,a 50 percent increase in Rockall haddock, five percent in Irish Sea haddock and eight percent in North Sea megrim indicates that after a period of dramatic reduction in quotas to help aid recovery, stocks are beginning to improve.
