OREGON horticulturist Dave Foster reduces vegetative growth in his wine grape vineyard by leaving two extra canes on each vine. This pruning technique, called growth diversion, reduces growth in the fruiting canopy by diverting growth to a second, disposable canopy at the bottom of the vine. "You can do this as little or as often as you like," says Foster, vineyard manager of Tualatin Vineyards, west of Portland, OR. "We got better fruit exposure, and the canopy was more open."
