"TOP WORKING," or "grafting over," is becoming an increasingly popular method for changing fruit orchards to new varieties. Its popularity is fueled by the outstanding returns from some of the new varieties and the disappointing returns from existingvarieties that have not provided sufficient capital for replanting. When successful, top working can change an orchard to a new variety and achieve significant yields in three to four years. Top working failures, which are common, significantly delay fruiting.
