WITH a mysterious name like "X-disease," one might think this malady of peaches and cherries is an enigmatic affliction no one has ever been able to comprehend. But that's actually not the case at all. According to the Ohio State University professorof plant pathology and Extension specialist Mike Ellis, while not a lot of research has been done on X-disease, its causes and symptoms are well understood. "It's not an extremely uncommon disease, but it's not a really common one, either," says Ellis. In fact, when Ellis discovered an orchard with about 100 trees infected with X-disease in central Ohio last summer, it was only about the fourth time he'd seen it at all in his 32-year tenure.
