THE definition, of "local" fruits and vegetables may be changing in the eves of consumers, ccording to a nationwide survey conducted bv the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, many consumers consider produce "local" when it has traveled 100 miles or less from the farm to point of sale, versus coming from their own state or region. More than 750 consumers participated in the Web-based survey, which was distributed in August 2008. The new Leopold Center report, "Food, Fuel and the Future: Consumer Perceptions of Local Food, Food Safety and Climate Change in the Context of Rising Prices," summarizes the responses.
