Chestnuts All Year: A Michigan-based grower cooperative has set out to market its crop beyond the holiday season

FROM the highly flavorful and aromatic chestnut sniffing that complements roasted turkey to using naturally sweet chestnut flour as a grain and sugar substitute for celiac disease sufferers, Chestnut Growers, Inc. (CGI), a 40-member grower cooperative, is working to promote Michigan's newest agricultural industry beyond the traditional "chestnuts roasting on an open fire." With the state's anticipated future crops reaching upwards of 100,000 pounds in the next five years, peddling chestnuts at farmers' markets alone isn't enough, says CGI President Roger Blackwell.
