Growers and researchers in the Eastern U.S. are looking into pest management efficacy. ABOUT four years ago, researchers in the Eastern US. began evaluating pest management systems based on reduced-risk tactics that would lead to enhanced and economical biological control. The participating states in the Risk Avoidance and Mitigation Program (RAMP) were Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. The goal of RAMP is to design pest management systems thatgreatly reduce residues and worker exposure to specific materials. The specific objectives are to determine the effectiveness of reduced-risk tactics for managing key tree fruit pests; measure changes in biological systems resulting from the use of reduced-risk tactics; evaluate the economics of using reduced-risk tactics, and; develop and deliver educational programs to facilitate the implementation of reduced-risk tactics.
