The Right Stuff: Choosing the right soil amendment for your orchard requires a cost-benefit analysis

MY father-in-law helped to design the Titan rocket boosters that put the Apollo astronauts on the moon. He knows about the "right stuff." However, he still doesn't believe me when I say that all the activity in the root zone of a growing crop is morecomplex than NASA's Mission Control. The crop rootzone is much more forgiving, but choosing the right soil amendment in the right quantity is still a tough decision. There are three areas that we try to improve with soil amendments: fertility, water management, and disease management.
