Aeration and aerator deployment in shrimp ponds

Aeration is an essential means to achieve higher yields in fish and shrimp ponds. Aerators are introduced to ponds to achieve several goals: a. Supply oxygen to the animals to overcome oxygen limitations and thus enable higher stocking densities and yields. b. Distribute the oxygen horizontally and vertically in the pond. c. Mix water and sediment. d. Control sludge coverage, location and drainage. It is important that aerators be designed, used and deployed so as to achieve all of the goals mentioned above. The means to achieve, or to approach these goals are the selection of aeration capacity (hp/ha), aerator type, aerator location, aerator operation mode and the appropriate pond design.
