Access to south European finfish aquaculture facilities (ASEFAF)

Five research fields generally support a mature agricultural production -- rearing technology, nutrition, pathology, genetics and physiology. They are the guarantee of a sustainable economical development ensuring a good balance in the findings related to the animal/plant production itself, its survival and its quality. They are the main research themes undertaken on marine fish production in the Ifremer laboratories of Palavas-les-flots and Plouzane (Brest). In these two main aquaculture researchcentres, Ifremer has developed varying research on several species, through numerous national and European programmes. The European Community and Ifremer have agreed to provide transnational access for all European aquaculture research & development teams (including aquaculture SMEs) through an initiative entitled "Access to South European Finfish Aquaculture Facilities" (ASEFAF), which is funded until 2004 through the RTD and training programme "improving the Human Research Potential and the Socio-economic Knowledge base". The ASEFAF project provides 29 experimental units fitted with different tanks in sizes from 1.5 1 to 16 m3, supplied with sea water or fresh water, and including the possibility of recirculated water. All necessary scientific equipment and laboratories are also provided. The experimental aquaculture hall of Ifremer Palavas offers 12 rooms equipped with flow-through and recirculating sea water systems in Mediterranean conditions with genetics and chemical support laboratories. The Brest station offers 8 outdoor units with flow-through sea water supply and Atlantic natural temperature and a hall of 9 rooms equipped for physiology and nutritional studies.
