On the path to a manufactured feed for farmed southern bluefin tuna

The southern bluefin tuna (SBT) Thunnus maccoyii aquaculture industry is one of Australia's big aquaculture success stories. Born out the cooperation of the South Australian (S.A.) Government, the Japanese Overseas Fisheries Corporation (JOFC) and the Tuna Boat Owners Association of Australia (TBOAA) in the early 1990's, the SBT aquaculture industry, based primarily on the value-adding of a fishery caught species, now has an annual value in excess of US dollar 60 million. However, if this success is to be maintained both industry and researchers must work to improve production, reduce any associated risks, and decrease adverse impacts on the environment. Realizing these needs will not be an easy task but a significant breakthrough is near due to new developments in Australian feed technology.
