THE SHEER LOGISTICS OF running this dairy farm successfully are mind-boggling. Piero and Lorenzo Mondonico operate Az. Agr. Mondonico F.LLI in what could best be described as a suburb of metropolitan Milan, Italy's second largest city with about 1.4 million inhabitants. Soil conditions in this area of the fertile Po Valley are excellent, the climate nearly perfect although summers can be dangerously hot with daytime highs in excess of 40C. Yet try to imagine maneuvering heavy loads of corn silage oralfalfa hay from outlying fields through congested city traffic to storage facilities on the home farm. Picture yourself trying to run a dairy operation on just six acres at the comer of Finch Avenue and Yonge Street, with most of the crop land a few miles away by the back city streets to a large acreage near Canada's Wonderland.
