The Louisiana oyster industry has been declining in the last few decades because of disease, predation, habitat lost and pollution. Similar declines have occurred in other oyster producing regions of the U.S. and to overcome these issues they have turned to new technologies, such as hatcheries and off-bottom culture techniques (Anonymous 1990). This study is an economic analysis of integrating these technologies into the Louisiana oyster industry, employing a demonstration project that uses hatchery-produced triploid oysters and an off-bottom culture technique commercially used in Australia.
