Indian consumer behavior is rapidly changing with a shift in the new generation's preference toward luxury commodities as a result of a significant increase in income and changing life styles. Demographic factors that are favorable to the rising demand for branded products and increases in purchasing power have necessitated development of new space for the retail industry. This is probably the only cause for the retail boom. The Indian retail industry contributes 10 percent of the country's GDP and its current annual growth rate is 8.5 percent. In the Indian retail market, the scope for growth can be seen from the fact that it is expected to rise to US$608.9 billion in 2009 from US$394 billion in 2005.
