Federal road cuts

Despite an announced program of 1.7 billion dollars of roads spending, the Federal Government has been accused of short-changing Western Australia by more than 27 million dollars in the 2002/03 budget. Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the cuts would impact at all levels, from national highways to local roads. "WA has 25 percent of the national highway network, but we will receive only 10 percent of the total budget for national highways," MacTiernan said. "Making up the maintenance shortfall on these vitally important roads will take 6 million dollars from other state highways and road projects.
