The Western Australian Government will spend 5.6 million dollars over four years to clean up the site of a privately owned waste control site in the Perth suburb of Bellevue that was destroyed in the state's worst waste management accident. The fire at the Waste Control plant in February 2001 resulted in the explosion of 5000 drums of mostly toxic liquid chemical. The remediation program at the site will begin with a 400,000 dollars investigation into the extent of contamination of the soil and groundwater, including establishing whether there has been any impact on the deeper aquifer. Premier Geoff Gallop said government agencies were also involved in national and international research to identify the best remediation processes.
