Depending on the application, different demands are put upon fiat rolled wire products. In some applications, for further processability, very tight dimensional tolerances are required. The conventional process usually involves rolling of drawn wire in a multistand mill with flat rolls. The wire spreads freely as it becomes thinner in the rolling stands. In this way, the width of the wire is not directly under control. There are several reasons why the width may vary during the process. Any changes in the mechanical properties of the half product, its dimensions or any changes in the rolling process parameters will influence the product width. This paper proposes a method by which the product width may be controlled within a given range using the rolling stands upstream in the process.
