Ahead of likely legislation enforcement to reduce nitrate release into ground water, Paul Labous and Stephen Willis, have carried out several water recycling trials. Their interim findings follow. The 1996 experiment consisted of two water recirculated Efford capillary beds, one with a slow sand filter fitted so that recirculated water had to pass through it and the other bed without a filter (control bed). Half of each bed was covered with an experimental application of Spinout impregnated into a woven plastic material. The objectives of the trial were to assess the spread of Phytophthora cryptogea from heavily infected inoculated plants, to assess the effect of placing a slow sand filter into the recirculation system of one of the two beds, to monitor nitrate levels within the leachate of the beds and to measure the effect of using Spinout1 impregnated into Tildenet.
