Current situation and prospects of brown coal and lignite mining in Slovakia

The article presents the current situation and prospects of brown coal mining in Slovakia with a long lasting history dating back to XIX or even XVIII century. At that, time coal was exploited in Handlova-Novaky region. At present three mines are carrying out exploitation: Novaky, Cigel and Handlova. The author characterised geological and technical aspects of mining in Slovakia. He also presented volume of production at particular mines integrated in the largest Coal Company Hornonitranskie Bane, Prievidza Ltd. Co., grouping also mechanical workshops and the main mines rescue station. The other mines, for instance, in Zahorie region and in Dolina region close to Velky Krtis village, are of less importance.
