Improving the Preparation of Power Transformer Technical Specifications

Specification of a product is description of the product to the manufacturer and it is the summary of requirement to a buyer. Power transformer is a tailor made product and therefore innumerable variables are there while describing the product. It isin this context an accurate specification by the buyer becomes very essential to get the correct product that he wants.Many countries have standard specification and even private utilities who want to buy the transformer has to use only the utility specification. But in India the standardisation activities are still at its nascent stage and as a result there is wide diversity in the specification of different utilities. Each power utility have their own specification very much different from others. At the same time many utilities do not have product specialists who can critically understand and summarise the requirements. All these make the specification very unrealistic at least in case of some utilities. Many a time the requirements are not fully described, in some cases unachievable needs are spelt out and in certain cases over specifications are given. In some cases even the person who prepared the specification find it difficult to logically explain why some requirements are specified.
