A squirrel cage induction motor is the most versatile, low cost work horse available to industry. Of late, the increasing significance of power saving, environmental requirements, the desire for smaller dimensions and stipulations imposed by nationaland international markets have led to significant technology changes in the field of induction motor design and manufacturing. Induction motors account for approximately 50% of the overall electricity use in industrialized countries. On an average the energy consumed by an induction motor is 60 -100 times the initial cost of the motor. Therefore efficiency of the motor is of paramount importance and a small increase in efficiency can make a big difference in energy savings with other added advantages. Similarly miniaturization in all fields has had a significant impact on electrical equipment industry also and voice is being continuously raised for reduction in size of motors as well. As a smaller motor occupies lesser space, easy to handle and is maintain.
