Comparison of strength characteristics of nodular graphite cast iron welded joints by various welding processes

The welding processes which have been used in the welding of cast iron, such as the gas welding process with matching filler materials and the shielding metal arc welding process with DFCNi rods were assessed to be very low in tensile strength, workability and deposition efficiency. Also, the TIG welding process with a NiFe based filler rod was evaluated to have the same assessment. The shielded metal arc welding process with D4316, and the MAG welding process with YGW12, YF308LC (CO_2), YF308LC (Ar + CO_2) and Y308 were evaluated highly in tensile strength, workability and deposition efficiency. Good directionality and stability of the arc are considered to induce the welding work to be easier, hence the quality of the weld to improve. The MAG welding process with YF308LC wire (CO_2 and Ar + CO_2) was judged to the most practical welding method for the welding of nodular graphite cast iron. The shielded metal arc welding method with DFCNiFe welding rod was found to be inferior in workability and economic merit.
