This brief account is from personal recollections and information gathered from the Environment Agency, the Met Office (2012), and a comprehensive report by Devon County Council (2012) of the extent of damage across the county. One area particularly affected was the river Axe and its tributaries. The Axe rises along the Somerset-Dorset border and runs into the sea at Axmouth in Devon, while the main tributaries (Yarty, Umborne and Coly) rise to the west, in Devon, on the southeast of the Blackdown Hills. Flooding occurred in parts of Axminster with 67 properties affected, particularly in the Cricketers and Willhayes Park housing areas (Devon County Council, 2012: 9).
