At Haddenhauser in Germany, Thomas Sondermeier farms 370 acres of wheat and rape and runs 300 PIC sows. He is helped by his father, a student, and a part-timer. It never ceases to amaze me how continental farmers manage with so few staff. Of course sows are in stalls mostly, which is a tremendous saving, and Thomas is no different. Well in fact he is different in as much as his sows are in tethers which he knows he has to be out of by January.
