Water management for most companies normally means finding water sources, transporting that water to the wellsite for hydraulic fracturing and then, where feasible, treating or filtering the flowback water before recycling it for use in the next well. Devon Energy Corporation, however, has added one more element to its water management operations in West Texas. The company has installed a number of covers over its frac-water pits in an effort to reduce the loss of water due to evaporation, according to Tim Raley, thus saving the Oklahoma City-based company millions of both dollars and barrels of water.
