With regard to the rarely use of lasers in the dismantling area, several different laser processing heads were developed to exploit the high potential of laser technology for these applications due to the advantages of laser cutting. Especially localised energy input, very narrow cutting kerfs, and as a result, low rates for process by-products are favourable. Higher process flexibility and an increase in the cutting thickness of steel plates are special requirements for use in dismantling technologies. By reducing existing process limitations and exploiting previous developmental work, more applications are possible, for example the efficient processing of higher material thicknesses. This makes the laser more versatile which is necessary for a constant use of the technology, with regard to the generally high investment. However, for an economic use of lasers, not only the investment but also a decreased use of personnel and lower peripheral costs, e.g. due to low-emission laser cutting, play a very important role. The perspectives for the future use of lasers in dismantling technologies can thus be seen positively, by reducing radioactive wastes, lowering costs and increasing flexibility. The development of new laser sources and different laser modules are therefore the decisive factors for progress in this field.
