The Engineering in Action forum was held in London on 2 February 1996 and marked the launch of the new Engineering Council. The Engineering Council is the coordinating body for engineering in Britain. It has responsibility for the development and regulation of the profession and for representing engineering at the highest levels in government, industry and the general public. Speakers at this prestigious event, which was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister Michael Heseltine, included Dr Alan Rudge, chairman of the Senate of the Engineering Council, Sir Alastair Morton of Eurotunnel, Professor Alec Broers, vice-chancellor elect of Cambridge University and Dr David Bellamy, the environmentalist.
