Current issues in the North American Mushroom Industry: Part I

This month we have included the first instalment of David Beyer's talk given at the HRI/HDC Subject Day on Thursday, 20th June. His talk breaks neatly in two pads. The first, which is included in this edition, describes the US industry. The second part will deal with research issues. I wish to extend my sincere thanks to Helen Grogan, Tim Elliott, Ralph Noble, Kerry Burton and Peter Mills for inviting me to attend HRI's Mushroom Day and for their extremely fine hospitality during my visit to England. The visit, albeit a short one, gave us time to reflect on the mushroom industries and research projects in our respective countries, which is important for the exchange of information and for the encouragement of cooperative research. The UK mushroomindustry is lucky to have such dedicated and productive researchers working for them; their results to date have provided the mushroom industry around the world with basic and practical science to address their growing challenges. My charge today is to provide the audience with an update of what is happening in the North American mushroom industry and at Penn State: our continuing challenges, successes and changes that have occurred over the past few years. To that I have included some of the research projects that have been complete or still in progress.
