Peter says that he has 'always worked'. Even when he was 15 years old, his mother sent him to work during the school holidays on his grandparent's 150-acre mixed farm in East Sussex. As a result he has always been interested in farming and in growing things. When not working on the farm he was at grammar school near Chobham in Surrey doing 'O' and 'A' levels. At 17 years old he had a gardening job and at weekends worked on Darlington's Heather Farm near Woking as a mushroom porter driving an electric milk-float carrying mushrooms to the Pack House. While awaiting his 'A' level results he carried on working in the mushroom farm during the summer. He did, however, find time to take the pilot-aptitude tests at Biggin Hill airfield with the intentionof joining the armed forces. Although he passed the tests, for some reason, he decided to carry on working at the mushroom farm. "It was more to do with money", Peter confesses. As well as his full-time job on the mushroom farm he also had two part-timejobs. From 5 am to 7.30 am he managed a paper shop, in the evenings, from 6 to 9 pm, he worked at a petrol station and after that he went to the pub. These jobs were bringing him some 2-300 pound weekly while his friends were earning only 30 pound. "Theystill owe me money", he muses.
