A Review of Deep Basin Gas Reservoirs of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin

The prolific Deep Basin Gas area of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB; Fig. 1) is presently mapped northward from the United States-Montana border into northeastern British Columbia. The Canadian Deep Basin is the western part of the WCSB foreland basin (Fig. 2) and forms a regionally extensive area of hydrocarbon-saturated, abnormally pressured, thermally mature, Mesozoic to Paleozoic clastic rocks (with minor associated carbonate sequences) characterized by multiple stacked predominately "permeability challenged" gas reservoirs with little to no water production (Masters, 1984; Zaitlin, 2003; Figs. 3-6). To date, this largely continuous Deep Basin gas fairway has been estimated to hace yielded in excess of 10 TCF of produced gas (Canadian Potential Gas Committee, personal communication, 2006).
