The Eastern Area Meeting and christmas dinner, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk

As I hurried towards the Farmers Club in Bury St Edmunds for the Eastern Area Meeting I met a well-known composter hurrying in the opposite direction. "It's been cancelled," he said, "everyone's down with food poisoning". I almost believed him, he seemed so sincere. Now what do you make of that? This was the second meeting under the chairmanship of Graham Mann. The core of the meeting was David Mann and Peter Davies' kind repetition of their Chester presentations for those, probably the majority, who had been unable to leave East Anglia to attend. For this reason the detailed content of their talks isn't reproduced here as it has/will appear(ed) in the Journal, in full. The theme of the meeting, like the session at Chester was surviving the next five years. Graham introduced the subject by suggesting that the short-term priority was survival and in the medium term to return to profitability without which long-term survival was impossible. He further suggested that the means by which those aims could be achieved were increases in productivity, in prices received and in general levels of efficiency.
