摘要

American chestnuts (Castanea dentata) once dominated the Appalachians, making up approximately 25 percent of the hardwood forests. They were found as far north as Maine, Vermont, Michigan, and Ontario, and as far south as Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. Occurring in stands with white oak (Quercus alba), red oak (Quercus rubra) and red maple (Acer rubrum), they reached heights above 100 feet and diameter's between three and seven feet. The rot resistant wood was used for utility poles, railroad ties, fencing, furniture and tannin for the leather industry. The nuts, which are produced starting when the trees are seven to ten years of age, supplied food for both humans and wildlife. The nuts from American chestnuts are smaller than those of Chinesechestnuts (Castanea mollis-sima), Japanese chestnuts (Castanea crenata), or European chestnuts (Castanea sativa) but have a much sweeter flavor.
