Implementation of the Water Framework Directive in Bavaria

Implementation of the Water Framework Directive leads to numerous new tasks for the administration of water management. After the recent amendment of the Water Resources Act, legal implementation also requires an amendment of the water laws of the Federal States. Guidelines on a European level are being developed for technical implementation. In Germany the LAWA has compiled a guide book with special attention to standard implementation. In the Federal States practical procedures such as analysis ofriver basins and the fundamentals of new management plans are currently being implemented. Using Bavaria as an example, organizational accomplishment of the task is presented on the levels of the water management offices, the state government and the State Office for Water management including the coordination with Bavaria's neighbors.
