Discussion of structural changes in German water management - a report from the Fresenius Water Days (June 2002)

Liberalization and modernization of the German water industry were the main topics during the fourth Fresenius Water Days. Participants discussed the differences between liberalization and modernization. The viewpoints of Dr. Werner Langen, member ofthe European Parliament, concerning the liberalization of public services in Europe and his thoughts on the modernization of the German water industries were of particular interest. Representatives of different associations, scientists and executives from public and private heads of water companies discussed different political, economical and environmental problems involved in liberalization of the German water industry. Comparison with the British and French water industries was particularly enlightening. Participants indicated that they do not intend to copy foreign structures, but instead will seek a German solution for the modernization of the water industries.
