UNFORTUNATELY, SEAT is the black sheep of the Volkswagen Group, having been unprofitable since 2007, with a loss last year of ?269.7 million, down from ?299.5 the year before. The problem has been overdependence on the collapsed home market and poor management in the early Noughties. SEAT, or Sociedad Espanola de Automoviles de Turismo, might seem a fairly new company, but has been mass-producing cars for just five fewer years than Volkswagen. From its inception in 1950, SEAT had produced eight million vehicles by the time Volkswagen completed the purchase of the company in 1990. In the famous Piech 1993 strategy, SEAT was pitched against Alfa Romeo, Fiat's sporty arm and for the next 7 years the Spanish brand was well on target, peaking at 500,000 sales in 2000, probably twice as many as Alfa Romeo then.
