Ironing Out Asbestos Contamination

Researchers at the University of Torino (Interdepartmental Center "G. Scansetti" for Studies on Asbestos and Other Toxic Particulates, University of Torino, Dipartimento Biologia Vegetale, via le Mattioli 25, 10125 Torino, Italy: Fax: (+39) 11-670-7459) have found varieties of fungi that remove the iron from asbestos fibers, making them less toxic. It may even be possible, say the scientists, to transfer the organisms' asbestos-attacking genes into other soil microbes.
