Rheinhafen Steam Power Plant Unit 4 - Successful Repowering from a Hard Coal Unit into a Combined-cycle Power Plant -

Long-term supply agreements signed in 1993 committed the EnBW Kraftwerke AG, a 100 % subsidiary of EnBW AG, Karlsruhe, to providing top performance. To be able to meet this obligation, the company decided in 1995 to upgrade Unit 4 of the Rheinhafen Steam Power Plant (Rheinhafen-Dampfkraftwerk - RDK), from a hard coal unit into a modern, peak load, combined-cycle power plant and to increase the unit output from 100 to approximately 360 MW. At that time Unit 4 had been out of operation. From November 1998 until October 2000 the GT26 AB gas turbine upgrade was successfully implemented. Today, after more than 2000 operating hours of peak shaving service, the GT26 gas turbine can be considered a success in the repowering application at RDK.
