There has been a massive increase in out knowledge about the yeast Malassezia pachydermatis over the last 10 years. We know that Malassezia dermatitis (MD) caused byyeast overgrowth on the skin is classically highly pruritic and several breeds notably the basset hound, cocker spaniel and West Highland White Terrier are over represented. It is suggested that 50% of dogs with MD are atopic or are affected by other allergic diseases such as food or flea allergy (Deboer & Marsella, 2001).
