A great number of the international lignites show very high sulphur contents of up to 2.3% raw corresponding to 7,5% waf and partly far above (14% waf). This means a 5 up to 10 times higher sulphur content compared to local German lignites, These high-sulphur coals are fired for example in the ALSTOM circulating fluidised bed boilers (CFB) in Provence/Gardanne in France, Can in Turkey and Akrimota in India, To meet the valid European emission standards a SO{sub}2 separation efficiency of above 98% is needed.
