Formation of Mercury Complexes In the gas phase, Hg(II) is an X-Hg-X molecule with covalent X-Hg-bonds. It dissolves rather well in water, and it is transferred to the washing liquid with the bonding partners X. In the aqueous solution, the covalent molecular structure is maintained. HgX_2 is (nearly) un-dissociated. The un-dissociated dissolved HgX_2 is in a direct equilibrium with its concentration in the gas phase. X stands for any charged or uncharged ligand, such as for example Cl~-, Br~- or H_2O.
